How much is an STD test?
There is no national price for an STD test that this site can date and cite: Medicare's national outpatient price lookup does not cover it, and no free national price for it with a date of its own could be found. So the prices below are what named hospitals publish, including the price each will accept from a patient paying cash. An STD test is several tests, each billed under its own code, so the price depends on which ones are run. Boston Medical Center publishes $216.00 each for the chlamydia and gonorrhea tests, CPT 87491 and 87591, with a cash price of $97.20, and $141.00 for an HIV antigen and antibody test, CPT 87389, with a cash price of $63.45, in its file dated 13 March 2026. Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes $217.10 for the chlamydia test and $93.05 for the gonorrhea test, and The University of Chicago Medical Center publishes $411.00 and $390.00 on its main lines. The CDC says many clinics offer confidential and free or low-cost testing.

What changes the price
- Which tests are run
- There is no single code for an STD test. A visit may run one test or a dozen, and each is billed on its own line, so ask which ones before the sample is taken.
- Which line it is billed on
- Boston Medical Center publishes the syphilis screen at $38.00 on one line and $12.00 on another. The University of Chicago Medical Center publishes its chlamydia test at $411.00 on its main line and $113.00 on a line ending "-Laf", and neither file says which a visit falls on.
- Whether you are paying cash
- Boston Medical Center's cash price is 45 percent of its gross charge on every line in the table above. The other two hospitals publish the same figure for cash as for list.
- Where you are tested
- Every figure here is a hospital laboratory's. The CDC says many clinics offer confidential testing free or at low cost, and a clinic or pharmacy sets its own price.
How to pay less
- Look for a free or low-cost clinic first
- The CDC runs a locator, GetTested, that finds HIV, STI and hepatitis testing by ZIP code, and says many clinics offer confidential testing free or at low cost.
- Ask which codes will be billed
- A panel is several tests. Knowing the codes lets you check each one against a hospital's published price, or drop a test you do not need.
- Ask a hospital for its cash price by code
- Quote the CPT code. Boston Medical Center publishes a cash price under half its gross charge for each of these tests; the other two hospitals here publish no cash discount.
Questions
How much is an STD test without insurance?
Ask the hospital or clinic for its cash price before you book. Hospitals must publish a discounted cash price where they offer one, and the files quoted on this page show those prices beside the list price. With insurance, what you pay depends on your plan's negotiated rate, your deductible and your coinsurance, so ask your insurer for an estimate.
How much is an STD test?
It depends on which tests are run, because each is billed on its own. Boston Medical Center publishes $216.00 each for the chlamydia and gonorrhea tests and $141.00 for an HIV antigen and antibody test in its file dated 13 March 2026.
How much is an STD test without insurance?
That is the cash price where a hospital publishes one. Boston Medical Center publishes $97.20 each for chlamydia and gonorrhea and $63.45 for the HIV test. Franklin Memorial Hospital and The University of Chicago Medical Center publish the same figure for cash as for list.
How much does a full STD panel cost?
None of these three hospitals publishes a price for a panel as one item. Each test in it is billed separately, so the cost is the tests that are run. Ask for the list of codes.
Where can I get tested for free?
The CDC's GetTested locator finds HIV, STI and hepatitis testing near a ZIP code, and the CDC says many clinics offer confidential testing free or at low cost.
Why does a hospital have to publish this?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requires every hospital operating in the United States to publish a comprehensive machine-readable file of all items and services and a consumer-friendly display of shoppable services, states that it audits a sample of hospitals and investigates complaints, and states that hospitals may face civil monetary penalties for noncompliance.
For scans, procedures and other tests priced the same way, see every guide in medical costs.
Where these figures come from
Every figure here is published by the hospital named beside it, in US dollars, in the United States, in its own machine-readable standard charges file under 45 CFR 180.50, and each file carries the attestation that the information encoded is true, accurate and complete as of the date in the file. The dates are the ones the files give themselves: 13 March 2026 for Boston Medical Center, 9 September 2025 for Franklin Memorial Hospital, and 1 April 2026 for The University of Chicago Medical Center. All three files were downloaded again before this page was written, and each was byte-identical to the copy read on 25 September 2026. The distinct published prices were counted per code and per description before any was quoted, and where one code carries more than one price, every price is shown. These are laboratory charges. Nothing here is added into a panel total, averaged or restated as a typical cost.
