How much does an echocardiogram cost?

There is no national price for an echocardiogram that this site can date and cite: Medicare's national outpatient price lookup does not cover it, and no free national price for it with a date of its own could be found. So the prices below are what named hospitals publish, including the price each will accept from a patient paying cash. An echocardiogram is billed either as one code or as three, and nobody tells you which before you have it. The complete study with Doppler and colour flow built in is CPT 93306, and the three hospitals on this page file it at $2,480.40, $2,910.00 and $5,935.00. The same study without Doppler is CPT 93307 at $939.60, $1,338.00 and $2,717.00, and then the Doppler and the colour flow are added on as their own codes. Only one of the three hospitals files a discounted cash price at all: Boston Medical Center files $1,309.50 against its $2,910.00. And one of the three publishes its colour flow add-on, CPT 93325, at three different prices on the same day, $24.00, $1,515.00 and $1,539.00, which is the widest spread inside a single code anywhere on this site.

These are the gross charges each hospital files. The three columns come from three separate filings and are set side by side here because they are the same codes, not because they are the same measurement: Boston Medical Center publishes no billing class at all, while the other two file these as facility charges. The ordering is not consistent down the table, which is the useful part. Franklin Memorial is the cheapest on the complete study and the most expensive on the transoesophageal one, and Boston Medical Center is the cheapest on both Doppler add-ons and the dearest on the stress test of the two non-academic hospitals.

Fourteen codes, fourteen prices, one each. This is the only one of the three hospitals here that files a cash price below its list price, and it is 45 percent of the gross charge on every row, so this is the hospital that answers the without-insurance question from a published figure rather than an estimate. This file publishes no billing_class column, so these rows are called unlabelled rather than assumed to be facility charges.

Every row prints the same figure twice, which is this hospital saying a cash payer is charged the list price. It carried almost no endoscopy codes at all and it carries a full set of echocardiogram ones, which is a useful reminder that an absence in a price file usually means a procedure a hospital does not do rather than a price it is hiding. Its own description names the colour flow row an add on, in those words.

The cash price is the list price on every row. Twelve of these thirteen codes carry exactly one price, and the colour flow add-on carries three: $24.00, $1,515.00 and $1,539.00, all filed as facility charges on the same day. That is the widest spread inside a single code anywhere on this site. It is also worth setting beside what the same file does with endoscopy, where NOT ONE code carries a single price: the ambiguity belongs to a code chargemaster lines rather than to a hospital, and here is one hospital showing both in one file.

This is the question worth asking before the appointment, because the answer changes whether you are quoted one number or three and nobody volunteers it. CMS requires hospitals to publish these files and names imaging among the shoppable services, which is why the codes above can be looked up at the hospital you are actually going to rather than taken from this page.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services , page last modified 10 September 2024. United States · US dollars. Checked 9 October 2026. Still current: the CMS page for hospitals, last modified 10 March 2026, sets out the same rule, one machine-readable file of gross charges, discounted cash prices and payer-specific negotiated charges, and at least 300 shoppable services. The examples named here, imaging and a colonoscopy, appear only on this 2024 page.

What changes the price

Whether the Doppler is inside the code or added to it
The structural one. At Franklin Memorial Hospital the complete study with Doppler built in is $2,480.40 as CPT 93306, while the version without it is $939.60 as 93307 with the Doppler at $934.10 and the colour flow at $777.00 charged separately on top.
Which hospital, and the order changes by code
A complete echocardiogram with Doppler is $2,480.40 at Franklin Memorial Hospital, $2,910.00 at Boston Medical Center and $5,935.00 at The University of Chicago Medical Center. On the transoesophageal study the cheapest of the three is Boston Medical Center at $3,447.00 and the dearest of the two non-academic hospitals is Franklin Memorial at $3,794.65.
Which of several prices the hospital means by one code
The University of Chicago Medical Center publishes CPT 93325 at $24.00, $1,515.00 and $1,539.00, all as facility charges in one file on one day, and nothing in the file says which one applies.
Whether the hospital files a cash price at all
Boston Medical Center files 45 percent of its gross charge as the discounted cash price on every echocardiogram row, so a complete study with Doppler is $1,309.50 rather than $2,910.00. Franklin Memorial Hospital and The University of Chicago Medical Center file the same figure in both columns.
Which kind of echocardiogram was ordered
At Boston Medical Center a limited follow-up study is $1,285.00, a complete one with Doppler $2,910.00, a stress echo $2,376.00 and a transoesophageal study $3,447.00, all on the same list on the same day.
Whether the cardiologist is in the number
These are facility charges or, at Boston Medical Center, unlabelled ones. Somebody reads the study and that reading is usually its own charge, so a quote for the scan may be one line of two.

How to pay less

Ask whether it is one code or three
It is the question this page exists to prompt. At Franklin Memorial Hospital the bundled study is $2,480.40 while the unbundled one starts at $939.60 and gains a $934.10 Doppler charge and a $777.00 colour flow charge.
Ask for the cash price by name
Boston Medical Center files $1,309.50 for a complete echocardiogram with Doppler against a gross charge of $2,910.00. The other two hospitals here file no discount at all, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.
Ask whether a limited study answers the question
A follow-up or limited echocardiogram is CPT 93308 and is the cheapest transthoracic option at all three: $865.55 at Franklin Memorial Hospital, $1,285.00 at Boston Medical Center and $1,625.00 at The University of Chicago Medical Center. Whether it is enough is a clinical decision rather than a saving, so it is a question for the doctor.
Ask which of the published prices applies
Where a hospital publishes more than one against a code, as The University of Chicago Medical Center does on the colour flow add-on, the file does not say which. Ask before the appointment rather than after the bill.
Compare the same code between hospitals
An echocardiogram is at least seven different codes, so comparing the word between two providers compares nothing. CPT 93306 is $2,480.40 at Franklin Memorial Hospital, $2,910.00 at Boston Medical Center and $5,935.00 at The University of Chicago Medical Center.
Ask who else will send a bill
Every figure here is a facility or unlabelled charge and none includes the cardiologist who reads the study.

Questions

How much is an echocardiogram without insurance?

Ask the hospital or clinic for its cash price before you book. Hospitals must publish a discounted cash price where they offer one, and the files quoted on this page show those prices beside the list price. With insurance, what you pay depends on your plan's negotiated rate, your deductible and your coinsurance, so ask your insurer for an estimate.

How much does an echocardiogram cost?

A complete study with Doppler is filed at $2,480.40 by Franklin Memorial Hospital, $2,910.00 by Boston Medical Center and $5,935.00 by The University of Chicago Medical Center. Boston Medical Center files a cash price of $1,309.50 for it; the other two file no discount.

How much is an echocardiogram without insurance?

Where a hospital files a discounted cash price, that is the answer: $1,309.50 for a complete echocardiogram with Doppler at Boston Medical Center, or $602.10 for the version without Doppler. Franklin Memorial Hospital and The University of Chicago Medical Center file the same figure for cash as for the list price.

Why is an echocardiogram sometimes three charges?

Because the Doppler and the colour flow are their own codes. CPT 93306 is the complete study with both inside it, while CPT 93307 is the complete study without Doppler and 93320 and 93325 are added on. All three hospitals here price each of those codes separately.

What is the difference between 93306 and 93307?

93306 includes the spectral Doppler and the colour flow; 93307 is the same complete study without them. At Boston Medical Center that is $2,910.00 against $1,338.00, and at Franklin Memorial Hospital $2,480.40 against $939.60.

How much does a stress echocardiogram cost?

It is a different code again. Franklin Memorial Hospital files $1,736.30 for CPT 93350, Boston Medical Center $2,376.00 with a cash price of $1,069.20, and The University of Chicago Medical Center $4,361.00.

Why does one hospital publish three prices for the same add-on?

Because a code can appear many times in a hospital chargemaster under different descriptions. The University of Chicago Medical Center files CPT 93325 at $24.00, $1,515.00 and $1,539.00, all as facility charges on the same day. The rule on this site is to count the distinct prices before quoting a code and then show all of them.

Does the price include the cardiologist?

No. Every figure here is a facility charge or an unlabelled one, and the reading of the study is usually charged separately.

Why does a hospital have to publish this?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requires every hospital operating in the United States to publish a comprehensive machine-readable file of all items and services and a consumer-friendly display of shoppable services, names imaging among those services, states that it audits a sample of hospitals and investigates complaints, and states that hospitals may face civil monetary penalties for noncompliance.

Where these figures come from

Every figure here is published by the hospital named beside it, in US dollars, in the United States, in its own machine-readable standard charges file under 45 CFR 180.50, and each file carries the attestation that the information encoded is true, accurate and complete as of the date in the file. The dates are the ones the files give themselves: 13 March 2026 for Boston Medical Center, attested by Christopher Abate, 9 September 2025 for Franklin Memorial Hospital, attested by Kenneth Olsen, and 1 April 2026 for The University of Chicago Medical Center, attested by Chris Allen. The Boston Medical Center and Franklin Memorial files were downloaded on 25 September 2026 and the University of Chicago file on 23 September 2026. BEFORE ANY CODE WAS QUOTED THE DISTINCT PUBLISHED PRICES FOR IT WERE COUNTED PER CODE AND PER BILLING CLASS: every code at all three hospitals carries exactly one price except the University of Chicago colour flow add-on, which carries three and is shown with all three. Boston Medical Center publishes no billing_class column, so its rows are called unlabelled rather than assumed to be facility charges; the other two label every echocardiogram row facility. None of these figures includes the cardiologist who reads the study. The first table sets three hospitals side by side because they are the same codes, and the three columns remain three separate filings rather than one measurement. Nothing here is averaged, turned into a ratio or restated as a typical cost, and no figure on this page is added to another.

The rule itself. CMS states that starting 1 January 2021 each hospital operating in the United States is required to publish pricing information online in two ways, as a comprehensive machine-readable file with all items and services and as a display of shoppable services in a consumer-friendly format, that CMS audits a sample of hospitals and investigates complaints, and that hospitals may face civil monetary penalties for noncompliance.
