About this site

HowMuchCost answers price questions for the United States and shows its working. There are 71 guides here drawing on 121 named sources, and every figure on every one of them links back to whoever published it.

What we publish

Cost guides, organised by the sort of decision they belong to: work around the house, a car, a legal matter, a medical or cosmetic procedure, a wedding. Each one opens with the answer, in a sentence, and then shows the tables behind it.

We do not sell the services we write about, we do not take a commission for putting you in touch with anyone, and there is no advertising on these pages. If that changes, this paragraph changes with it.

What we publish, counted

A bar for each kind of page on the site, 2 of them, sized by how many pages are of that kind.

Cost guides carrying sourced figures 67 pages
Planning pages with no prices, and saying so 4 pages

Counted from the guide data when this page was built. The counts move as guides are added, and this drawing moves with them.

The one rule

No price appears without a named source, that source’s own date, and the market and currency it applies to. It is enforced by the build rather than by our good intentions, and the method page explains exactly how.

The practical consequence is that this site is smaller than it could be. There are categories here with nothing in them, and guides that publish an hourly rate instead of a total because a total was not something we could stand behind. Both of those look like gaps and both of them are the rule working.

What we get wrong

National figures. Everything here is a United States average or range, and averages hide a lot: metro labour rates run well above them and rural rates below. Treat a figure here as the shape of the market rather than the price of your job.

Source quality varies too. A fee schedule published by a government office is stronger evidence than a cost guide written by a publisher, and the source list sorts them so you can see which kind you are reading.

Corrections

Every figure on this site names its source and the date that source published it, so a price that has moved can be checked against the source itself. Where a source has changed its numbers or withdrawn a page, the guide is corrected on the next review and the new date is shown with it.
