HowMuchCost

How much does a CT scan cost?

What a CT scan costs depends on who is paying. Without insurance, the figure to use is a hospital's cash price, and the hospitals below publish theirs. For people on Medicare, what Medicare pays for a CT scan of the head without contrast in 2026 averages $212 in total at a hospital outpatient department, of which the patient pays about $42, or $163 at an ambulatory surgical center with the patient paying about $32, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; that is the government's rate for Medicare patients, and a private plan or a cash payer is charged its own price. There is no national figure for what private insurance pays: FAIR Health's consumer cost lookup, the nearest thing to one, gives estimates only for a ZIP code you enter, so it is not quoted here. It depends on the body part, on whether contrast is used, and on the hospital, and all three are published. For a CT of the head without contrast, CPT 70450, Boston Medical Center publishes a gross charge of $1,903.00 and a cash price of $856.35 in its file dated 13 March 2026. Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes $1,287.30 for the facility, and The University of Chicago Medical Center $2,610.00, both as the same figure for a cash payer as for a list price. The sharpest number on this page is a different one. A low-dose chest CT for lung cancer screening, CPT 71271, is published at $198.00 cash by Boston Medical Center and $178.00 by Franklin Memorial Hospital, while The University of Chicago Medical Center publishes $2,682.00 for it, the same amount it publishes for a diagnostic chest CT. The scan a doctor orders because you are unwell and the scan you book because you smoked are the same machine and, at one of these three hospitals, the same price.

Sixteen codes, sixteen prices: this file publishes exactly one figure for each, which is why it can be quoted at all. It carries NO billing_class column, so these rows are labelled unlabelled rather than assumed to be facility charges. It is also the only one of the three that discounts a cash payer, and the screening row is the one to look at twice: at $198.00 cash it is a fraction of every diagnostic CT above it.

Six different exams share $1,430.20 here, so the body part does not always move the number. These are the facility rows only. The professional rows exist under the same codes and their gross and cash fields are blank on all sixteen of them, checked one code at a time, which means no amount is published for the radiologist rather than that the reading is free.

The row that matters most here is 71271: this hospital publishes the low-dose lung cancer screening CT at $2,682.00, which is to the dollar what it publishes for a diagnostic chest CT on the row above. This same file publishes six different prices for a single colonoscopy code, and one price for each of these sixteen, which is worth knowing before anyone concludes a hospital is either readable or not.

Why so many CT results are about one city

What you will findWhat it is
A page about CT prices in one named cityOne provider or one marketplace quoting prices it has collected in that city. Four of the first ten results on this search are pages like that, three of them for the same city
A price much lower than the hospital figures hereUsually an imaging centre rather than a hospital, and often a bundled self-pay offer. That is a real price for a real scan, and it is not the same purchase as a hospital outpatient CT
A national averageA model of many scans at many providers. It has no code, no hospital and no billing class in it, and those three decide the bill
The figures on this pageThree named hospitals quoting their own federal filings, each with the CPT code, the billing class where the file states one, and the date the hospital attested to

CMS requires every hospital to publish these files and names imaging among the shoppable services. It does not require an imaging centre that is not a hospital to publish anything, which is why a city page can be cheaper and better targeted than this one and still not be checkable in the same way.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services , page last modified 10 September 2024. United States · US dollars. Checked 9 October 2026. Still current: the CMS page for hospitals, last modified 10 March 2026, sets out the same rule, one machine-readable file of gross charges, discounted cash prices and payer-specific negotiated charges, and at least 300 shoppable services. The examples named here, imaging and a colonoscopy, appear only on this 2024 page.

What changes the price

Which body part, and whether contrast is used
This is the code, and the code is the price. At Boston Medical Center a head CT without contrast is $1,903.00, the same head with contrast is $2,497.00, and both ways in one visit is $2,794.00. An abdomen and pelvis with contrast is $3,745.00.
Whether the scan is a screening or a diagnosis
This is the largest difference on the page and it is not about the machine. Boston Medical Center publishes the low-dose lung cancer screening CT at $440.00 with a cash price of $198.00, against $2,215.00 for a diagnostic chest CT. Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes $178.00 against $1,430.20. The University of Chicago Medical Center publishes $2,682.00 for both.
Which hospital
A lumbar spine CT without contrast, CPT 72131, is published at $2,127.00 by Boston Medical Center, $1,430.20 by Franklin Memorial Hospital and $2,344.00 by The University of Chicago Medical Center. Three files, three attesters, one code.
Whether anyone is paying on your behalf
Boston Medical Center publishes a gross charge and a lower cash price on every CT row. Franklin Memorial Hospital and The University of Chicago Medical Center publish the same figure in both columns, so at those two paying cash buys no discount on the published price.
Whether the radiologist is in the number
Not at these hospitals. Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes professional rows under the same CT codes with the gross and cash fields blank, so an amount for the reading is not published rather than included. A figure for the scanner and the room is not the whole bill.
Whether you are looking at a hospital at all
A free-standing imaging centre is not a hospital and is under no rule requiring it to publish anything, so its price can be lower and is not checkable in the same way. Four of the first ten results on this search are pages about one city, which is usually that kind of provider.

How to pay less

Ask whether yours is the screening code
If you are being scanned because of smoking history rather than symptoms, ask whether it is billed as the low-dose lung cancer screening CT. Boston Medical Center publishes $198.00 cash for that code and $996.75 for a diagnostic chest CT, and Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes $178.00 against $1,430.20.
Ask for the cash price by name, and expect it to vary
Boston Medical Center publishes a cash price below its list price on every CT code. The other two hospitals here publish the list price in both columns, so the question is worth asking and the answer is worth checking against the file rather than assumed.
Ask whether contrast is planned
It changes the code and every hospital here prices the two differently. At Boston Medical Center a cervical spine CT is $2,769.00 without contrast and $4,834.00 with it.
Ask whether the radiologist bills separately
Every figure on this page is the facility or is unlabelled. Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes the professional rows with no amount at all, so a quote covering the scan may not cover the person reading it.
Compare the same code, not the same words
A CT of the abdomen and a CT of the abdomen and pelvis are different codes at different prices, and the second is dearer at all three hospitals here. Comparing 74177 against 74177 compares something.

Questions

How much does a CT scan cost with Medicare?

Medicare's national average total for a CT scan of the head without contrast in 2026 is $212 in a hospital outpatient department, with the patient paying $42 on average, or $163 in an ambulatory surgical center, with the patient paying $32, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. With a private plan, your cost depends on its negotiated rate and your deductible; without insurance, ask for the cash price, which the hospital files on this page publish.

How much does a CT scan cost?

It depends on the code and the hospital. For a head CT without contrast, CPT 70450, Boston Medical Center publishes $1,903.00 with a cash price of $856.35, Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes $1,287.30 and The University of Chicago Medical Center $2,610.00, each in its own dated and attested file.

How much is a CT scan without insurance?

That is the discounted cash price where a hospital publishes a lower one. Boston Medical Center does, at $856.35 for a head CT. Franklin Memorial Hospital and The University of Chicago Medical Center publish the same figure for cash as for the list price, so paying cash buys no discount on the published number at those two.

How much is a CT scan with insurance?

Your share of whatever your plan has agreed with the hospital, and Boston Medical Center publishes that agreed figure for every plan it names. For a CT of the abdomen and pelvis with contrast, CPT 74177, Boston Medical Center lists $405.28 for Medicare, $356.43 for UnitedHealthcare Commercial, $961.11 for Blue Cross, $1,647.80 for Aetna and $3,183.25 for Cigna, against a list price of $3,745.00. Your deductible and coinsurance decide how much of the plan figure you pay.

Why is a lung cancer screening CT so much cheaper?

At two of these three hospitals it is priced as a screening rather than as a diagnostic scan: $198.00 cash at Boston Medical Center and $178.00 at Franklin Memorial Hospital, against $996.75 and $1,430.20 for a diagnostic chest CT. The University of Chicago Medical Center publishes $2,682.00 for the screening code, which is exactly what it publishes for a diagnostic chest CT, so the saving is not universal and is worth asking about by code.

Does contrast change the price?

Yes, and it changes the code. At Boston Medical Center a lumbar spine CT is $2,127.00 without contrast and $4,130.00 with it, and every hospital here prices the two separately.

Does the price include the radiologist?

No. Franklin Memorial Hospital publishes professional rows under the same CT codes with the gross and cash fields blank, which means no amount is published for the reading rather than that it is included.

Why are so many CT price pages about one city?

Because much CT work is done by free-standing imaging centres, which compete locally and advertise a local price. Four of the first ten results on this search are location-scoped pages. Those are real prices; they are one provider in one city rather than a filing anyone can check, which is what this page uses instead.

Why does a hospital have to publish this?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requires every hospital operating in the United States to publish a comprehensive machine-readable file of all items and services and a consumer-friendly display of shoppable services, names imaging among those services, states that it audits a sample of hospitals and investigates complaints, and states that hospitals may face civil monetary penalties for noncompliance.

Where these figures come from

Every figure here is published by the hospital named beside it, in US dollars, in the United States, in its own machine-readable standard charges file under 45 CFR 180.50, and each file carries the attestation that the information encoded is true, accurate and complete as of the date in the file. The dates are the ones the files give themselves: 13 March 2026 for Boston Medical Center, attested by Christopher Abate, 9 September 2025 for Franklin Memorial Hospital, attested by Kenneth Olsen, and 1 April 2026 for The University of Chicago Medical Center, attested by Chris Allen. All three files were downloaded again on 25 September 2026 before any figure here was quoted, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services pages linked below were read on that date, the two on what a hospital must publish again on 9 October 2026. BEFORE ANY CODE WAS QUOTED, THE DISTINCT PUBLISHED PRICES FOR IT WERE COUNTED PER CODE AND PER BILLING CLASS, and all sixteen codes at all three hospitals carry exactly one price each, which is why all three can be quoted on this page when only one could be quoted for a colonoscopy. Boston Medical Center publishes no billing_class column, so its rows are labelled unlabelled rather than assumed to be facility charges; the other two are facility rows. None of these figures includes the radiologist who reads the scan. Nothing here is averaged, turned into a ratio or restated as a typical cost, and three hospitals are three hospitals rather than a national picture.

The rule itself. CMS states that starting 1 January 2021 each hospital operating in the United States is required to publish pricing information online in two ways, as a comprehensive machine-readable file with all items and services and as a display of shoppable services in a consumer-friendly format, that CMS audits a sample of hospitals and investigates complaints, and that hospitals may face civil monetary penalties for noncompliance. Medicare's own national averages for an outpatient procedure, split by hospital outpatient department and ambulatory surgical center. For each it gives what Medicare pays, what the patient pays on average, and the total of the facility fee and the doctor's fee. Medicare rates are set by the government, so they work as a national benchmark; a private plan or a cash payer is charged its own price. Figures were read from the JSON the lookup page loads, saved in docs/research/cms-ppl-2026-10-12.json.
