How much does it cost to neuter a dog?

At the three clinics on this page it runs from $70 to $500, and which end you are at depends less on the dog than on which kind of clinic you walk into. Sacramento SPCA prices by weight and publishes $200 to spay or neuter a dog under 20 lbs. and $500 for one between 120 and 139 lbs., the same price for either operation, with 20 or 50 percent off for named groups. Humane Society of Sonoma County publishes one price for any dog, $300 to neuter and $400 to spay, and includes a microchip, a nail trim and a cone collar in it. Spay and Neuter Kansas publishes $70 or $100 for either operation depending on the household income, and will only treat a dog at all if you can show you qualify. Every one of those is a low-cost clinic that exists to make the operation affordable, so these are the bottom of the market rather than the middle of it, and a private veterinary practice is a different question this page cannot answer, because private practices do not publish.

One price for any dog, whatever it weighs, which is the opposite model to the Sacramento list above it. Spay and Neuter Kansas, published dog and cat prices, two figures per row

ProcedurePrice
Dog neuter$70/$100
Dog spay$70/$100
Cat neuter$50/$70
Cat spay$50/$70
Rabies vaccination, at the time of surgery$5

The two figures on each row are the income-banded prices, which the clinic writes as depending on income. It states that a household must be low income to qualify for its services at all and asks for proof such as a tax return or a Vision card, and says that if the fees are still out of reach it will discuss the grants it has available. The surgery fee includes a free nail trim on dogs and free pain medication afterwards. This is the only one of the three that charges the same for a spay as for a neuter.

What changes the price

Which kind of clinic, which matters more than the dog
This is the biggest single factor on the page. The same operation on the same animal is $70 at Spay and Neuter Kansas for a household that qualifies and $400 at Humane Society of Sonoma County, and both are nonprofit clinics publishing their own prices. Neither figure is wrong and neither is a national price.
Whether the clinic prices by weight at all
Two models exist and this page has both. Sacramento SPCA charges $200 to neuter a dog under 20 lbs. and $500 for one in the 120 to 139 lbs. band, and Humane Society of Sonoma County charges $300 to neuter any dog at all. For a large dog those two answers are very different, and for a small one they are different the other way.
Spay or neuter
A spay is the more involved operation, but only one of these three clinics prices it higher. Humane Society of Sonoma County charges $400 against $300. Sacramento SPCA charges the same in every weight band, and Spay and Neuter Kansas charges the same for both.
What is already in the price
The headline is not comparable until you know this. Humane Society of Sonoma County includes a physical exam, pain medication, a microchip, a nail trim and a cone collar. Sacramento SPCA prices a microchip at $25 and an e-collar at $10, and does not say what its surgery price includes. Spay and Neuter Kansas includes a nail trim and pain medication.
Whether you qualify at all
Spay and Neuter Kansas states that you must be a low-income household and must show proof of income, so its published figure is not available to everyone who reads it. Sacramento SPCA applies no income test to its regular price, and its discounts go to named groups rather than by income band.
What a low-cost clinic will not do
The limits are published alongside the prices and they decide whether the number applies to your dog. Sacramento SPCA treats dogs only between 3 months and 7 years old, its weight bands stop at 139 pounds, and it limits bookings to two a week per home.

How to pay less

Ask what the price already includes before comparing two of them
A cheaper surgery with the microchip, the cone collar and the pain medication charged on top can end up dearer than a price that has them in it, and the three clinics here divide those items differently.
Find out which weight band the clinic would put your dog in
Where a clinic prices by weight it is the band rather than the breed that decides. Sacramento SPCA publishes seven bands for dogs, each $50 above the one before.
Ask whether you qualify before assuming the lowest figure applies
The cheapest number on this page comes with a condition attached. Spay and Neuter Kansas will ask for proof of income, and its published figure exists for households that can show it.
Ask about grants rather than assuming the list is final
Spay and Neuter Kansas says on the same page as its prices that it will discuss any current grants it has if the fees are outside your means, which is a question the price list itself invites.
Get the vaccinations done at the same visit where they are offered
Both Humane Society of Sonoma County and Spay and Neuter Kansas publish vaccination prices beside the surgery, and Spay and Neuter Kansas offers them only at the time of surgery, so it is one visit or two.

Questions

How much does it cost to neuter a dog?

At the three clinics here, $70 to $500. Spay and Neuter Kansas publishes $70 or $100 depending on household income, Sacramento SPCA publishes $200 to $500 by weight band, and Humane Society of Sonoma County publishes $300 for any dog. All three are low-cost clinics.

How much does it cost to spay a dog?

More than a neuter at one of the three. Humane Society of Sonoma County publishes $400 for any dog against $300 for a neuter. Sacramento SPCA publishes $200 to $500 by weight band and Spay and Neuter Kansas $70 or $100, the same as their neuter prices.

Why is spaying more expensive than neutering?

It is the longer and more involved operation, and the published prices track that at Humane Society of Sonoma County. Sacramento SPCA and Spay and Neuter Kansas charge the same for either, which is a decision about their own pricing rather than about the surgery.

Does the price depend on the size of the dog?

At some clinics and not others, and this page has one of each. Sacramento SPCA publishes seven weight bands from under 20 lbs. to 120 to 139 lbs. Humane Society of Sonoma County publishes a single price for any dog.

Is a microchip included?

At Humane Society of Sonoma County it is, along with a physical exam, pain medication, a nail trim and a cone collar. At Sacramento SPCA microchipping is a separate $25.

Are these the prices a regular vet would charge?

No, and that is the most important limit on this page. All three are low-cost clinics whose purpose is to make the operation affordable, one of them only to households that can prove low income. A private veterinary practice sets its own fee and, unlike a funeral home or a hospital, is under no rule requiring it to publish one, so this site cannot quote it.

Will a low-cost clinic take any dog?

Not always, and the limits are published with the prices. Sacramento SPCA treats dogs only between 3 months and 7 years old, and its weight bands stop at 139 pounds.

Where these figures come from

Every figure here is a price published by the clinic named beside it, in US dollars, in the United States, taken from its own price list: Sacramento SPCA pricing effective 1 March 2026, Humane Society of Sonoma County effective 1 July 2026, and Spay and Neuter Kansas, whose page shows no date, though its page metadata records a change on 21 August 2025. The Sonoma and Kansas pages were last read on 25 September 2026. The Sacramento SPCA schedule was read on 9 October 2026, when it replaced a Houston list whose prices dated from December 2024. ALL THREE ARE LOW-COST CLINICS. Two are nonprofits and one restricts its prices to households that can prove low income, so this page describes the affordable end of the market and not the middle of it. A private veterinary practice is under no obligation to publish a price and generally does not, which is why no private practice appears here and why no figure on this page should be read as what a vet will quote you. Three clinics in three states are three clinics and not a national average, and no ratio or difference between any two figures is stated.
