What changes the price
- Preparation
- Sanding, filling, rust treatment and masking is most of the labour in a paint job and almost none of the advertised price. It is where a headline quote and a final invoice part company.
- Same colour or a change
- Staying the same colour means the door shuts, the jambs and the engine bay can be left. Changing colour means painting all of them, or living with the old colour showing.
- Vehicle size
- A large SUV or a pickup takes more material and more hours than a compact coupe.
- Paint type and finish
- Single-stage enamel is the cheap end. Two-stage, metallic, pearlescent and matte finishes each cost more, in material and in the skill needed to lay them evenly.
- Rust and dents
- Paint over rust fails. Bodywork is a separate trade and it is the most common reason a quote goes up after the car is inspected.
How to pay less
- Get the quote after somebody has looked at the car
- The Pricer’s own examples show prep pushing a quoted paint line to roughly double. An inspected quote is the only one worth comparing.
- Do the prep yourself
- Sanding and masking is time rather than skill, and shops will quote labour-only if you arrive with the car ready.
- Stay the same colour
- It removes the jambs, the door shuts and the engine bay from the job, which is a large fraction of a colour-change bill.
- Ask what the warranty covers
- The service levels above differ by warranty as much as by paint. On a car you intend to keep, that is the comparison that matters.

Why is a cheap paint job cheap?
Because it skips preparation. Single-stage enamel over lightly scuffed old paint looks acceptable for a while and does not last, which is exactly what the short warranty is telling you.
Is it worth painting an older car?
If you are keeping it and the body is sound, a mid-range paint job buys years of appearance. As an investment it rarely returns its cost: a repaint does not lift a car’s value by what the repaint cost.
How long does a car paint job take?
A basic chain job is a few days. A full colour change with proper preparation is a week or more, and bodywork adds to that before any paint is mixed.
Is wrapping cheaper than painting?
A wrap sits broadly in the same territory as a mid-range paint job and is reversible, which is its real advantage. It also hides rather than fixes what is underneath.
