How much does windshield replacement cost?
Windshield replacement costs $500 to $1,000 for a standard vehicle in the United States, and $1,500 or more for a luxury vehicle or specialty glass, according to CARFAX, published in January 2026, and that may not include recalibrating the driver assistance cameras behind the glass. CARFAX puts a chip repair at roughly $100 from a professional, or under $50 with a do-it-yourself kit. The Pricer, updated in July 2026, adds that a 2023 AAA study found ADAS component and calibration costs of $360 on a windshield replacement. Whether your car has a camera mounted to the windshield is the question that decides which end of that spread you land on.

What changes the price
- Whether the car has driver assistance cameras
- Lane keeping and automatic braking cameras sit behind the windshield and have to be recalibrated once the glass is changed. That is a separate operation with a separate bill.
- Repair or replace
- A small chip out of the driver’s line of sight can often be filled rather than replaced, and the repair lines in the table above are a fraction of the replacement ones.
- Original or aftermarket glass
- Manufacturer glass costs more than an equivalent aftermarket panel. On a car with a camera or a heads-up display the difference is worth discussing rather than assuming.
- What is in the glass
- Rain sensors, heating elements, acoustic laminate and heads-up display coatings each add to the panel price.
- Your insurance
- Comprehensive cover usually includes glass, and several states require zero-deductible glass cover. Whether it is worth claiming depends on your deductible and your premium.
How to pay less
- Deal with a chip while it is a chip
- The gap between the repair and replacement lines above is the whole argument. A crack that spreads across the glass takes the cheap option off the table permanently.
- Check your glass cover before you pay
- Comprehensive policies often cover replacement with a low or zero deductible, and in some states that is mandatory.
- Ask about mobile fitting
- Many companies will replace the glass on your driveway at no extra charge, which removes a day without the car.
- Ask whether recalibration is included
- On any car built in the last decade this is the question that decides whether the quote you were given is the price you pay.
Questions
Can a cracked windshield be repaired instead of replaced?
Small chips and short cracks outside the driver’s direct view are often repairable. Long cracks, damage at the edge, and anything in the line of sight generally mean replacement.
Does insurance cover windshield replacement?
Comprehensive cover typically does, subject to your deductible, and a few states mandate glass cover with no deductible. Liability-only cover does not.
How long does a windshield replacement take?
The fitting itself is usually an hour or two. The adhesive then needs time to cure before the car is safe to drive, and camera recalibration adds to that.
Is aftermarket windshield glass safe?
Reputable aftermarket glass meets the same safety standards. The arguments for original glass are fit, optical clarity and, on cars with cameras, how reliably the calibration holds.
Where these figures come from
CARFAX gives its ranges without stating a method, and The Pricer builds on CARFAX for its January 2026 figures, so the two count as one line of evidence. We could not find a US windshield figure published by a manufacturer body, a regulator or an insurer that states its method, so treat this page as a sourced market guide rather than a measured national average. Recalibrating a camera after the glass is replaced is often a separate charge, which the itemised bill above shows as its own line. An earlier version of this page quoted Airtasker US, whose older ranges sat well below these, and it was replaced because the newer figures show the price has moved.
