What is on a casket price list?

Every casket the home sells and the price of each, and you are entitled to see it before you are shown a single casket. That order is set deliberately, because the cheaper ones are often not on display. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes a range of $1,295.00 to $11,235.00. Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia publishes $1,800 to $33,000, which is the widest single line on any list quoted on this site. Neither is a price you have to pay: a viewing can use a rental casket, at $1,095.00 from Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama and from $890 at Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia, a cremation needs no casket at all, and Tulip Cremation Northern California prices its alternative container at $5.00.

Cost breakdown

Each table below comes from one source, named underneath it, with the date that source last revised the figures. Everything is a United States figure in USD.

What the casket price list entitles you to

The rightWhat it means in the room
A written casket price listAll caskets the home sells, with the price of each. Sometimes on the General Price List, more often a separate sheet
Before you are shown any casketsSo you can ask about the lower-priced ones, which may not be in the display room at all
A separate outer burial container listIf the home sells containers and does not price them on the General Price List
No casket required for a cremationNo state or local law requires one, and a home offering cremation must tell you alternative containers exist and make them available
Buy the casket or urn somewhere elseThe home cannot refuse to handle it, cannot charge a fee for handling it, and cannot require you to be there when it is delivered

The order matters more than it looks. A display room shows what a home wants sold, and the right to the written list first exists so the cheaper end is visible at all. The Funeral Rule does not apply to third-party casket dealers, so a casket bought elsewhere is bought under ordinary consumer law rather than under this one.

Federal Trade Commission , dated July 2012 on the page, with no later revision shown; the page metadata records an edit on 4 March 2024. United States · US dollars. Checked 9 October 2026. Still current: the Funeral Rule these statements rest on, 16 CFR Part 453, has not been amended since 1994, and the eCFR text, up to date as of 7 October 2026, still carries it.

What changes the price

What is actually in the display room
A room holds a selection and a list holds everything. Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia publishes caskets from $1,800 to $33,000 and gives the complete list at the funeral home, which is the difference between what you can see and what you can buy. The Federal Trade Commission gives you the written list first for exactly this reason.
Whether the casket is bought or rented
A viewing before a cremation does not need a casket that goes into the ground. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes a Vista Oak rental casket at $1,095.00 against a casket range starting at $1,295.00, and Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia publishes a rental from $890 against caskets from $1,800.
Whether the disposition needs a casket at all
A cremation does not. The Federal Trade Commission states that no state or local law requires a casket for cremation and that a home offering cremation must make alternative containers available. Tulip Cremation Northern California prices its alternative container at $5.00 and its urns from $5.00 to $400.00.
The outer burial container, which is a separate list again
It is priced apart from the casket and required by cemeteries rather than by law. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes containers from $1,770.00 to $3,940.00 and Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia from $1,595.
Whether a package ties you to the home’s own caskets
This is the condition that undoes a cheap-looking package. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama states that its offerings are available only with a casket bought from that home, while separately pricing an immediate burial with a purchaser-supplied casket at $2,455.00.
Where you buy it
The Federal Trade Commission states that a funeral provider cannot refuse to handle a casket or urn you bought elsewhere, cannot charge a fee for doing so, and cannot require you to be present when it is delivered. The Funeral Rule does not reach the third-party seller itself, so that purchase sits under ordinary consumer law.

How to pay less

Ask for the written list before you walk into the display room
It is a right rather than a favour, and it is the only way to know the bottom of the range exists. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama starts at $1,295.00 and Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia at $1,800, and neither bottom is necessarily on show.
Rent rather than buy when the casket is only for the viewing
Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes $1,095.00 for a rental casket and Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia from $890, both below the starting price of buying one outright at the same home.
Price the package against the itemised route before accepting either
Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama prices an immediate burial with a casket you supply at $2,455.00, and its packages require a casket bought from the home, so the two paths are genuinely different purchases rather than the same one at two prices.
Check whether the cemetery requires a container before buying one
The requirement comes from the cemetery, not the law, so the cemetery is who to ask. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes outer burial containers from $1,770.00 and Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia from $1,595.
Buy elsewhere if you find the same thing cheaper
The Federal Trade Commission removes the two obstacles a home might otherwise put in the way: it cannot refuse the casket and it cannot charge you a handling fee for it.

Questions

When am I entitled to see the casket price list?

Before you are shown any caskets. The Federal Trade Commission requires a written casket price list ahead of the display so that you can ask about lower-priced caskets that may not be shown, and the list must cover all the caskets the home sells.

How much do caskets actually cost?

It depends entirely on the home and the range is wide. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes $1,295.00 to $11,235.00 and Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia publishes $1,800 to $33,000, both from their own lists with their own effective dates.

Can I buy a casket somewhere else and bring it?

Yes. The Federal Trade Commission states that a funeral provider cannot refuse to handle a casket or urn bought elsewhere, cannot charge a fee for handling it, and cannot require you to be there when it is delivered. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama prices an immediate burial with a purchaser-supplied casket at $2,455.00.

Do I need a casket for a cremation?

No. The Federal Trade Commission states no state or local law requires one and that a home offering cremations must tell you alternative containers are available and make them available. Tulip Cremation Northern California prices its alternative container at $5.00.

What is a rental casket?

A casket used for the viewing, with the body in a separate inner container that goes on to the cremation or burial. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes one at $1,095.00 and Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia from $890.

Is the outer burial container part of the casket price?

No, it is a separate item and often a separate list. Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama publishes containers at $1,770.00 to $3,940.00 apart from its caskets, and the Federal Trade Commission entitles you to that list before you are shown the containers.

Where these figures come from

Every figure here is a price published by the provider named beside it, in US dollars, in the United States, from its own General Price List: Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama in effect as of 1 October 2026, Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia effective 1 April 2026, and Tulip Cremation Northern California effective 29 July 2026. The Plummer and Tulip lists were read on 23 September 2026 and the Dryden list on 9 October 2026. Both homes publish a RANGE and give the itemised casket list in person, which is what the Funeral Rule requires of them, so the individual casket prices inside those ranges are not public and are not reproduced here. Two homes in two states are not a national average. No ratio or difference between any two figures is stated on this page.

  • The FTC Funeral Rule

Federal Trade Commission · dated July 2012 on the page, with no later revision shown; the page metadata records an edit on 4 March 2024

The federal regulator setting out what a funeral provider must give you: a written, itemised General Price List that is yours to keep, price information by telephone on request without giving your name, a casket price list before you are shown the caskets, and an itemised statement before you pay.

  • 16 CFR Part 453, Funeral Industry Practices

Electronic Code of Federal Regulations · Title 16 up to date as of 7 October 2026

The current text of the Funeral Rule, published by the Office of the Federal Register. Its source line is 59 FR 1611 of 11 January 1994, and the eCFR version history shows no amendment to sections 453.1 to 453.9 since. Section 453.1 defines a funeral provider as one that sells or offers to sell funeral goods and funeral services to the public, and defines cash advance items; 453.2 requires price information by telephone, a casket price list before caskets are shown, an outer burial container price list, a General Price List to keep and an itemised statement. Neither section mentions posting prices online. The FTC opened a review in November 2022 and held a workshop in September 2023; no proposed or final rule had appeared in the Federal Register by 9 October 2026.

  • General Price List

Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Alabama · prices in effect as of 1 October 2026

A traditional funeral home's own General Price List, published as a PDF, with four package offerings priced whole and the basic services fee and arranging fee itemised separately underneath them.

  • General Price List

Plummer Funeral Home, Decatur, Georgia · effective 1 April 2026

A traditional funeral home's own itemised General Price List, published as a web page rather than a download, listing each service and its price separately with no package pricing at all.

  • General Price List

Tulip Cremation Northern California · prices effective 29 July 2026

A direct cremation provider's own General Price List, licence FD 2322, San Francisco, California. Read from the published PDF, and the itemised page was checked against a rendering of the document because two text extractions disagreed about which amount belonged to which line. THE NAME IS KEPT AS THE PRICE LIST CARRIES IT. On 25 September 2026 this URL began resolving onto altogetherfuneral.com, which the estate ruling treats as a sign that a provider has been renamed or acquired. The destination page was opened and read: it still calls itself Tulip Cremation, still says Tulip Cremation is a cremation service in San Francisco serving Northern and Central California, and still says Established 2017. It states no acquisition and no rename in its own words, and the only mention of Altogether is in a newsletter consent line, so the entry keeps the name the price list carried rather than asserting a corporate change nobody has published. The figures stand as published on their own stated date.
